Dear Students,
I invite you to take part in the pro-seminar on "Contemporary Art & Theory." This class starts on Wednesday Feb 17th at 3.30 pm online (Google Classroom). This year due to the pandemic situation, this course will take the form of an online e-learning seminar. We will refer to my book published recently in Berlin in English entitled UCI Critical Theory and Contemporary Art Practice: Jacques Derrida, Jean-François Lyotard, Bruce Nauman, and Others With a Prologue by Georges Van Den Abbeele.
If you are interested in contemporary art and philosophy of art in the context of ecology, ethics, aesthetics, philosophy of art you are very welcome to join this class. The seminar will involve close reading of major theoretical statements on postmodern art by contemporary philosophers and critics of art cooperating with MoMA and TATE, such as Peter Osborne and Robert Storr. We will also read texts by a contemporary American eco-artist and philosopher Dawid Wood (Trees and Truth: Our Uncanny Arboreality, Thinking With Cats).
It is possible that, if the pandemic situation allows us to do this, at the end of the semester we shall also visit art galleries. We will get a close look at the galleries in Warsaw, talk to their owners and curators to get a better understanding of the art market here. During the last weeks we will attempt to explore the current Polish artscape while visiting the most prominent galleries in Warsaw and meeting their curators: Centre for Contemporary Art, National Gallery of Art, Museum of Modern Art, The Zachęta Gallery, Galeria Foksal, National Museum, etc.
The interesting reading assignments will concern contemporary art. The overall aim being to trace some of the conceptual threads that run through current artworks and art criticism. We will also refer to philosophical papers focused on the contemporary state of art criticism and theory, with the emphasis on present American and French aesthetics (Jacques Derrida, Jean-François Lyotard, Jean-Luc Nancy, Donna Haraway, David Wood, Fredric Jameson, Richard Rorty, Michel Foucault, Ihab Hassan, Jean-Luc Nancy, Arthur Danto, George Dickie, and Scott Lash).
Below please find the detailed description of this seminar.
